Taking Care of Your eBike Battery
In many cases, the battery in your eBike could be worth 30-40% of the total bike price, so it is important that we take every effort to maintain its life. A typical high-quality battery should last you 2-5 years, depending on how much you use it and how well it was taken cared of. Here are E-VéLO’s tips to ensure your battery stays fresh and functioning for a good amount of time:
Charging
- Always use the charger which came with the eBike battery. If you have misplaced or have issues with your charger, contact your local E-VéLO Service Center. In extreme cases, the battery can get over-amplified and overheat, causing a fire.
- Try not to leave the battery charging for more than 24 hours. A few hours over the 4-5 hour charging period is ok, but regularly charging for 24 hours or more will significantly degrade the performance. Charging overnight is fine.
Battery Storage
- Keep the battery away from high heat, open fire, high voltages and children.
- Best to keep the battery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight–and never in a storage that gets above 60° celsius in temperature.
- If you are not going to use your battery for a month or more, it is best to keep the battery at a half charge and then charge it once every 3-4 months to maintain the half-charge. Aim for somewhere between 40-80% charge.
Opening the Battery Case
- Please don’t do this. It will void your battery warranty and potentially cause a significant malfunction. The batteries have protective packaging and components which should only be serviced by authorized battery technicians. Mishandling or improper disassembly can destroy the protective safeguards, causing it to heat up, smoke, and in some cases, catch fire.
Disposal
- If for some reason you decide to dispose of the battery, please do not put it in your regular household waste. Not only is this dangerous for you, it is also terrible for the environment. E-VéLO will happily take your battery back and make appropriate arrangements for it to be carefully disposed of.
